Mesmer Still the Hardest Profession?
Simple. Is it still the hardest to understand, hardest to use wisely, and hardest to make a build for.

Hm, not really, put Ap, 3 pve skills and fill the rest with what you want and you are set to go and kill everything.

Well, how about if you play how a Mesmer was originally created to be played like? With stuff like confusion, control, etc.

I don't see how it can ever not be the hardest profession to use wisely, assuming you're talking about playing a mesmer as a mesmer and not as a FCing secondary profession or as a PvE-skills character. (As you already know) mesmer skills work by preventing actions or punishing actions. If you don't know what your enemy's actions are likely to be, you're going to fail at preventing or punishing them - you'll either take the wrong bar, or take a good bar and use it badly. Nothing's changed there.

If you have ever played with a good mesmer you should know that they are much more of an asset to a team then a downfall.

mesmer?? anyone still play these other than me? i've been a 4+ year mesmer addict. It is tougher than ever to get good group and play as true mesmer with vor nerf hurting us as it did. But same nerf 'retired' all the cop mesmers it seems. Quality players know/respect the class, so as it still takes awhile to get in a good team, the team that takes you is thankful they did. I love hearing ppl say 'wow, thanx, never did *blankity* with a mesmer b4'
so i m h o, same 'ole. mesmers= Rodney Dangerfield's of GW...no respect.

RA means nothing. The reason hex spamming Mesmers are effective is because there are so many stupid melees running around, often without a Monk.

I don't know if there is a hardest profession. I could see that there might be a steeper learning curve for certain professions, but when it comes down to it there is soo much to learn to really master any build or profession, you can't really say that one is ultimately the hardest. Sure some builds are really easy to run, but there is an infinite amount of strategy that comes with playing the game.

Playing a Mesmer is "hard" because it requires you to know your target to cast (anti caster or anti melee spells) and be ready for his every move (interruption) and know what that move is (spell, skill, etc..) so yes.. most consider it "hard" but people that know how to play one consider it easy.
I'd say 2/3 of the GW community says it's hard to play, probably because they (mostly) lack the patience to master the Mesmer, and blame it on the class sucking because they cannot play it.

Mesmers halfway decent dont spam hexes on everything... that was a fail comment.
I think the hardest thing i've done as a mesmer is PD in Heroes ascent. Juggling energy with apropriate hexes, interupting key skills and ensuring I wasnt shutting myself down all at once was an ordeal.
Pro PD'ers are absloutly amazing assets to a team.

This. The exact response I was hoping for. You basically helped me pick Mesmer as my main. Thank you!

if you're just spamming hexes around you're doing it wrong. either that or you're taking the extremely gay vor/backfire/empathy which takes no skill whatsoever. in that case be a man and run something else.

Mesmers have a bad press and one that is undeserved, its all part of the dumbing down of GW by some players.
They choose their profession and skills based on how fast you can kill something clear an area and move on.
Sorry but that isn't the way I play the game and I reckon I get more enjoyment for my money.
I also find it very satisfying to destroy my enemies in an elegant way

The problem is that mastering the mesmer class doesn't do you any good in PvE.
Being a good mesmer in PvE means you are still a mesmer, plagued by it's incompatibility with PvE. You'll probably need to work harder to achieve a level of play that other classes achieve without much trouble (compare a mesmer to a spirit spammer!), but given the design of PvE, you might not be able to surpass that level because the advanced techniques that could push the mesmer above this basic level just do not work.

Because confusion and control don't kill the mobs, damage does. When I want to control and confuse I go to pvp, it's almost useless in pve, a dead mob is better than a disabled mob because even though he is disabled he still hits a like a truck with just his basic auto attack. Trying to interrupt a 1second spell in HM is less usefull than unloading 2 assassins which will keep the target on it's ass for a while if I chain it well and they will still do damage. Frankly, interrupts, energy drain and other mesmer stuff aren't useful because battles are fast and numerous and it won't really matter that you prevented a 300 damage spell when there are 3 other enemies doing the same.

A mesmer isnt any "harder" to play than any other class really...
Its just that they are less effective in PVE due to their design and concept than other classes at most of the needed jobs in a team.
I laugh at the "you need to be awesome to play a mesmer well!" (RE PVE) ...its a commom misconception.

You must also hate the protection line of skills monks have.
